The Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa South has criticised the government for failing to give adequate attention to environmental sustainability, climate change and sanitation in the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review, describing the omission as a missed opportunity to address some of Ghana’s most pressing challenges.

Speaking to Adom News’ Ohene Amponsah during the debate on the Mid-Year Budget Review, the MP said it was unfortunate that the budget contained little or no significant policy direction on environmental protection, climate change and sanitation despite the growing threats facing the country.

According to him, environmental degradation and poor sanitation continue to pose serious risks to public health, livelihoods and sustainable development, making it imperative for government to prioritise investments in the sector.

He argued that Ghana requires substantial investment to tackle environmental challenges, including illegal mining, sand winning, indiscriminate logging and other human activities that continue to destroy the country’s natural resources, particularly its rivers and forests.

The legislator also called on the government to accelerate efforts towards green transition initiatives by investing more in renewable energy, especially solar power, while exploring opportunities in the blue economy.

He maintained that stronger policies and greater financial commitment are needed to protect the environment and ensure sustainable development.

The Fanteakwa South MP further urged President John Dramani Mahama to appoint a substantive Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, saying the sector requires strong leadership to implement policies and achieve Ghana’s environmental and climate targets.

He stressed that environmental protection should remain a key national priority and called on the government to demonstrate greater commitment through concrete policies and sustained investment.
