Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore Dr. Nana Ayew Afriye, has threatened to sue an aspiring NDC parliamentary candidate over a petition seeking a parliamentary probe into a health training school project in the Ashanti Region town.

In a Facebook post on Monday (10 August), the lawmaker described the petition as a “calculated attack calculated to tarnish” him and accused the petitioner of seeking “cheaper popularity”.

“Okay! Lawyers will see your post and advice. We will find you and talk facts,” Ayew Afriye said. “You can do propaganda but try and choose your battles.”

The MP dismissed claims that public funds had been misapplied to the project, saying Members of Parliament do not receive direct budgetary allocations from the National Health Insurance Authority.

“You dont know an MP allocation, NHIA budgetary allocation either to an agency or to an MP,” he stated. “No cheque has been issued to MP for Effiduase-Asokore for Asokore Nursing & Midwifery College either under NPP or under the NDC Government.”

He also denied any role in the sale of admission forms, noting that recruitment into health training institutions is advertised solely by the Ministry of Health.

Ayew Afriye said the facility was not admitting students because of a government policy freezing new nursing and midwifery schools.

“Asokore Nurses and midwifery college is stalled because your government has placed an embargo on the accreditation of new nursing and midwifery colleges,” he said.

He added that the buildings and equipment were “ready for use” and that he had lobbied for a principal to be seconded to the school. “Asokore Nursing and midwifery has all plus its equipments ready for use and set to admit students so long as it is accredited.”

“My brother you are too ignorant to contest primaries on the ticket of a political party. You are so much not knowledgeable and fit for purpose.”

The petition, dated 7 August 2026 and addressed to the Speaker of Parliament by Patrick Baah, who says he is an NDC member seeking to contest Effiduase-Asokore, cites an NHIA 2023 allocation of GHS 9.00 million for four new health training schools.

Baah noted that while the schools at Sefwi Asafo, Teshie and Tano Odumase are operational, the Asokore project “remains incomplete, abandoned, deteriorating and overgrown with vegetation”.

He asked Parliament and the Economic and Organised Crime Office to establish how much was allocated and released for Asokore, the identity of the contractor, and “the precise role” played by the MP in securing funding.
