Two teachers and a student have been remanded by the Obuasi Circuit Court over their alleged involvement in an attack at Obuasi Senior High Technical School that left its headmaster, Abdulai Zakari, injured.

The suspects; Kwasi Brefo, 41, also known as “Allah”, Appiah Arthur Joseph, 34, also known as Nana Appiah, and student (name withheld) appeared before the court on Tuesday (11 August) and were remanded to reappear on 17 August.

They face two counts of abetment under Ghana’s Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

The first charge is abetment to cause harm, while the second relates to abetment to cause unlawful damage.

Court documents show that the accused allegedly aided and abetted Owusu and others to attack Abdulahi Zakari with cutlasses and sticks at the school on August 4.

They are also accused of aiding and abetting others to cause unlawful damage to property belonging to the school. The value of the alleged damage had not been determined.

Other suspects have been listed as being “at large.”

The case follows an attack that prompted the Obuasi Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to order the immediate and indefinite closure of the school.

The school’s headmaster, Abdulai Zakaria, was assaulted during the unrest and was initially treated at the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital before being transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi for specialist care.

On 5 August, Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive Faustilove Appiah Kannin urged the public to disregard unverified accounts about the incident, saying the police investigation would establish what triggered the violence.

“Until the police complete their full, official investigations, everything circulating out there remains mere speculation,” she said.

The MCE said the speculation risked undermining the investigation and commended the Ghana Police Service for responding swiftly to restore order and secure the school.

At the time, police had arrested six suspects in connection with the incident.

Authorities said the school would remain closed until security assessments were completed and the campus was deemed safe for academic activities.

The allegations have not been tested in court, and the accused are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
