The Government of Ghana has rejected reports that it could be among African countries asked by South Africa to reimburse the cost of evacuating their nationals following recent xenophobic attacks.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Thursday, 13 August 2026, that Ghana fully funded the evacuation of its nationals from South Africa, with financial support from Ghanaian partners.

“The evacuation of all our compatriots was fully funded by the Government of Ghana and our Ghanaian partners,” the Ministry said in a statement.

It said Ghana did not seek any financial or material support from the South African government to bring its nationals home.

The Ministry said the latest evacuations had followed the same arrangement, with the Ghanaian government and its partners bearing the entire cost.

More than 1,600 Ghanaians have been evacuated from South Africa since May 2026, according to the Ministry, with the evacuations still ongoing.

It said evacuees are provided with reintegration funds, transport fares and other relief items upon arrival in Ghana to support their return and reintegration.

The Ministry therefore assured Ghanaians that the country would not be listed among countries being asked by South Africa to reimburse costs incurred in repatriating foreign nationals.

“The Ministry reiterates the Government’s commitment to protecting the lives and welfare of our citizens wherever they may be,” it said, adding that Ghana would continue to take action whenever the safety and security of its nationals abroad were at risk.

The Ministry also expressed gratitude to President John Mahama and Ghanaian partners for supporting what it described as a fully Ghanaian-funded evacuation operation.
