President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of the Upper East Region that the planned Upper East Regional Airport will be completed within 24 months once construction begins.

President Mahama gave the assurance on Thursday, 13 August 2026, after inspecting the site earmarked for the airport project.

He said the project was currently at the procurement stage and expressed confidence that construction would begin before the end of the year.

“The project is 24 months and I have been following the process of the procurement. I want us to let it go quickly,” Mahama said.

The President said the Upper East airport formed part of a broader government plan to expand airport infrastructure in the country.

He said new airports were also planned for Wa in the Upper West Region and Sunyani in the Bono Region.

“There are three airports we will be building. Wa is getting a new airport, the Upper East is getting an airport and then Sunyani is also getting a new airport,” he said.

President Mahama said he expected the project to move to the construction stage before the end of 2026.

“We hope that by the end of the year, we will come back here and we will cut the sword for the airport to start,” he said.

Although the official construction period is 24 months, Mr Mahama said the contractors had indicated that they could complete the project ahead of schedule.

“Even though they have given 24 months, the contractors assure us that they can do it in a shorter time than that,” he said.

The President said he would return to the region to join traditional leaders and residents for the commencement of construction once the procurement process was completed.
