The death toll from the fatal accident at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra-Kumasi Highway has risen to 11, with 13 others critically injured and receiving treatment at the hospital.

Head of Public Relations at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), DO1 Emmanuel Bonney, confirmed the latest figures while speaking to Adom News at the scene.

He also disclosed that three families had approached the GNFS in search of relatives who may have been involved in the crash.

According to him, the families have been referred to the police to assist with the identification of their relatives.

Explaining how the accident occurred, DO1 Bonney said the incident began after an “oboboyaa” was hit by a tipper truck, prompting a police vehicle to stop and direct approaching motorists.

He said a Sprinter bus was subsequently parked at the scene with passengers on board when another tipper truck loaded with sand crashed into it.

The collision resulted in multiple deaths and left several passengers with critical injuries.

DO1 Bonney said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the accident.

Meanwhile, Assembly Member for the Ofankor South Electoral Area, Dennis Quarshie, said crashes had become frequent at the location, affecting both the inner and outer lanes of the highway.

He attributed the recurring accidents partly to the high speeds at which motorists use the stretch and called for urgent measures to improve safety at the spot.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has also assured residents and road users that measures will be introduced to prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
