Several feared dead in accident involving Tipper Truck and Sprinter bus at Ofankor barrier

Five people are feared dead and several others seriously injured after a tipper truck collided with a Sprinter bus at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The crash left the Sprinter bus badly damaged, with several passengers trapped in the wreckage and emergency teams launching a major rescue operation.

According to ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), officers were dispatched to the scene to rescue passengers trapped inside the vehicle and assist survivors.

Five people have so far been confirmed dead, while several others sustained serious injuries.

The severity of the collision has required extensive rescue efforts, with emergency personnel working to free victims and transport the injured to health facilities for treatment.

One female victim, whose legs were reportedly severed in the crash, was evacuated from the scene by ambulance.

The GNFS described the situation as volatile as its officers worked to safely extricate victims from the wreckage and bring the rescue operation under control.

The exact number of casualties was yet to be established at the time of reporting, as rescue operations were still ongoing.

The accident has also disrupted traffic on the stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway, with movement on the main road temporarily restricted to allow emergency responders to work.

The GNFS has advised motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane and approach the area with extreme caution.

Drivers have also been urged to slow down and give way to emergency responders as rescue teams continue efforts to clear the wreckage and assist victims.
