The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has announced plans to deploy a new technology-driven traffic enforcement system nationwide in 2027 as part of efforts to curb road traffic offences and reduce road crashes.

The initiative is expected to introduce permanent cameras and other mobile surveillance equipment on roads across the country to monitor motorists and detect various traffic violations.

Mr Amaliba said the technology would be capable of identifying more than 16 different traffic offences, including speeding and reckless driving.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Thursday, August 13, 2026, Mr Amaliba disclosed the plans while commenting on the tragic accident at Ofankor, which claimed 11 lives and left several others injured.

“We are going to be using technology to regulate road traffic. We will permanently mount cameras on our roads, and some of the cameras will be on tripods and vehicles, and this will take away the human factor that extorts money and also serve as a check on drivers who engage in reckless driving.

“There are more than sixteen offences that the camera will be capturing. So if you are overspeeding or driving recklessly, you are captured, and you receive a text message to pay a fine, and if you fail to pay within fourteen days, it compounds, and your licence will be taken, and you won’t be able to drive again.”
