The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) is expected to launch a domestic care economy programme next year that could provide jobs for nearly 100,000 young people.

Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment George Opare-Addo announced the plan as part of government’s efforts to tackle youth unemployment and expand access to sustainable employment.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) event in Accra on Thursday, 13 August 2026, Opare-Addo said government remained committed to reducing unemployment before the end of President John Dramani Mahama’s first term.

He acknowledged that youth unemployment has increased slightly but attributed part of the pressure to Ghana’s growing youth population.

According to the Minister, government is implementing several interventions aimed at expanding employment opportunities for young people across the country.

He said the domestic care economy programme would be one of the major initiatives under the YEA.

“Next year, under the YEA, we’ll be launching the domestic care economy, and that alone is supposed to employ close to 100,000 young people,” he said.

Opare-Addo expressed confidence that the programme, alongside other youth employment initiatives, would contribute significantly to reducing unemployment.

He said government’s approach goes beyond creating temporary jobs, with emphasis also being placed on providing young people with decent and sustainable employment.

The planned programme is expected to expand opportunities within the domestic care sector while creating a structured pathway into employment for thousands of young Ghanaians.

The minister said government would continue to implement youth-focused interventions as part of its broader strategy to address unemployment and improve economic opportunities for the country’s young population.
