Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has called for an Africa-led strategy, backed by Russia, to tackle terrorism and violent extremism in the Sahel region.
Ablakwa made the call during a press briefing in Russia following bilateral talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.
He welcomed Russia’s cooperation and support for Ghana’s efforts to counter violent extremism in the Sahel, but said a sustainable response should be led by African countries, with support from international partners including Russia.
The minister said greater cooperation was needed to address the security threat in the region, where militant groups have expanded their activities in recent years.
“Russia’s role is welcome. We see Russia as an important partner to help us to deal with the threat of terrorism, and we want to continue to see more collaboration in that regard because the security of the Sahel, the stability of the Sahel, is the collective stability and security of the entire globe,” he said.
