Prempeh College’s quest to defend their title as reigning champions of the Luv FM Kel-Charcoal Toothpaste High School Debate has come to an end after a painful defeat to Church of Christ Senior High School (CHRISSEC).

The two schools clashed in what was widely seen as an underdog-versus-titan encounter, with defending champions Prempeh College tipped to secure a comfortable victory.

However, the boys from the Royal Greenland suffered a major setback as CHRISSEC produced a spirited performance to knock them out of the competition.

The schools debated the motion, “Adding towing services to insurance premium is disingenuous”, with Prempeh College arguing in favour of the motion while CHRISSEC opposed it.

Prempeh College argued that customers who pay insurance premiums should be entitled to the services covered by their policies without being required to make additional payments.

“It is only deserving that if one is paying for a premium service, they deserve to also receive such services without paying for extra,” one of Prempeh’s speakers argued.

CHRISSEC, however, mounted a strong counterargument and gradually unsettled the defending champions with a series of effective rebuttals.

After an intense final round, CHRISSEC emerged victorious by a unanimous decision of the judges, ending Prempeh College’s title defence with a 242-221 victory.

“We’ve done the impossible and now our eyes are on the trophy,” the CHRISSEC head boy said passionately.

The result sends the defending champions crashing out while CHRISSEC advances to the quarter-finals.

KUHIS edge T.I. AMASS in thriller

In another closely contested encounter, T.I. AMASS Kumasi faced last year’s finalists and two-time winners of the competition, Kumasi High School (KUHIS).

The schools battled over the motion, “The teaching of feminist ideologies to girls in our schools should cease.”

T.I. AMASS argued in favour of the motion, contending that with women’s rights already widely recognised and promoted, continuing to teach feminist ideologies in schools had become unnecessary.

Kumasi High School opposed the motion, arguing that feminist ideologies continue to inspire young women to aspire to leadership and reach the highest levels of society.

The KUHIS team pointed to the chairperson of the debate, Mrs Theodosia Jackson, as an example of the impact such ideals can have on women’s advancement.

The contest produced a tense battle of arguments, rebuttals and composure, with neither side willing to surrender its position.

In the end, Kumasi High School edged T.I. AMASS by the narrowest possible margin, securing a 234-233 victory by majority decision of the judges.

The result sees KUHIS join KNUST Senior High School and St Louis Senior High School in the quarter-finals.

The victory sparked celebrations among KUHIS students and supporters.

“Last year we were finalists. This year, we will be the champions. To all schools that have already qualified and all schools that are here to qualify, watch out for Kumasi High School,” one student declared.

With Prempeh College now eliminated, the race for the title has been thrown wide open.

A new champion will be crowned this year, with the remaining schools battling for the opportunity to etch their names into the history of the Luv FM High School Debate.
