Air Jordan 12 'Sumo': How to Buy the Japan-Exclusive AJ12
The Air Jordan 12 'Sumo' arrives August 23 as a Japan exclusive priced at ¥34,100 (about $215), pairing black leather, Night Purple and Metallic Gold details with deep Michael Jordan lore.

I have rules about resale, and the Air Jordan 12 ‘Sumo’ (IW1218-098) is testing every one of them. The Japan-exclusive AJ12 takes Tinker Hatfield’s Japan-inspired 1996 silhouette deeper with black leather, Night Purple armor, Metallic Gold hardware and details tied to Michael Jordan’s 1996 Nike trip. The Air Jordan 11 is still my favorite, but the 12 is making a serious run at the crown, and this pair is exactly why.

Where Can You Buy the Air Jordan 12 ‘Sumo’?
The bad news for U.S. sneakerheads: this is not a normal stateside SNKRS drop. The ‘Sumo’ releases August 23 only in Japan. atmos confirms the ¥34,100 price and style code, while Japanese release trackers list SNKRS Japan, atmos and TOKYO23. The atmos online raffle closed August 21.
For everyone outside Japan, resale is the practical lane. GOAT and StockX already show asks from the high $300s into the $500s depending on size. That is territory I usually avoid, but this pair is testing my discipline.
What Makes the Air Jordan 12 ‘Sumo’ Stand Out?

At a distance, the palette may remind you of the ‘Field Purple’ or A Ma Maniére’s black AJ12. Up close, the ‘Sumo’ separates itself. Black leather carries laser-etched wave graphics across Hatfield’s radiating panels, while a Night Purple pebbled mudguard wraps the shoe like armor. Metallic Gold eyelets and the JUMPMAN side plate add shine.
The tongue gets a full redesign: a crest-inspired gold Jumpman sits above purple ‘二十三’ stitching, which translates to 23. Senjafuda-inspired heel branding, wood-grain insoles and a subtly speckled purple outsole push the execution into another class.
Air Jordan 12 “Sumo” inspired by MJ’s trip to Japan in 1996 🏯💜

Why Does the Air Jordan 12 ‘Sumo’ Matter?
The history makes it hit harder. Nike’s AJ12 archive says Hatfield drew inspiration from the Japanese flag when he created the silhouette in 1996. That same year, Jordan joined Nike’s Hoop Heroes tour in Japan. A contemporary Stars and Stripes report records MJ refereeing Charles Barkley, Jason Kidd and Michael Finley against sumo wrestlers Akebono, Musashimaru and Konishiki.
Jordan Brand turned that wonderfully strange piece of lore into a sneaker instead of forcing a theme onto an AJ12. Wrapping paper featuring Jordan’s 1995-96 stats and a Jumpman paper-sumo game finish the story.
The Air Jordan 12 Is Having a Moment
‘Sumo’ isn’t a one-off — it’s the first of three AJ12 moments landing before spring.
Date | Air Jordan 12 Release | Status |
|---|---|---|
Aug. 23, 2026 | ‘Sumo’ | Japan exclusive |
Sept. 12, 2026 | ‘Bucks’ | Reported, $215 |
Jan. 23, 2027 | ‘Obsidian’ | Reported OG return, $215 |
Should You Buy the Air Jordan 12 ‘Sumo’?

I simply have to have this one. The AJ12 already earns points with me for its tank-like construction, true-to-size fit and Zoom Air cushioning, making it one of the rare Jordans I can wear for hours without paying for it later. Add the ‘Sumo’s’ materials, cultural specificity and Japan-only scarcity, and the collector appeal is obvious.
I still would not tell anyone to blindly pay $500-plus before release day. Resale moves fast. But if the market settles into a number I can live with, my usual rule against paying over retail may finally lose.
