Marina Mabrey is enjoying the best season of her WNBA career in her first year with the Toronto Tempo. Selected sixth overall by Toronto in the expansion draft after two seasons with the Connecticut Sun, Mabrey was quickly handed the reins as the leader of Sandy Brondello’s new team.

She has responded with career-best numbers, averaging 20.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists while shooting 44.1% from the field and 38.5% from 3-point range. She also earned her first All-Star selection and tied the WNBA single-game scoring record with 53 points this season.

While Mabrey continues to thrive in the WNBA, she brought attention to a personal issue she has been dealing with away from the basketball court.

The Tempo guard recently took to X to complain about persistent problems with her Rogers WiFi and difficulty getting a response from the company. The issue became serious enough that she later explained that a technician had attempted to fix it, only for the connection to fail again.  

Her complaint quickly caught the attention of rival telecommunications company Bell, which saw an opportunity to make its pitch. Bell responded by offering to put a deal on the table for Mabrey and asking to connect with her. Mabrey responded shortly afterward, asking the company to give her a call.

As Mabrey continues to hope for a resolution, she is also dealing with a right adductor injury. The veteran guard was ruled out against the Portland Fire on Friday, marking her second consecutive absence after missing Wednesday’s loss to the Washington Mystics.

The Tempo have been eliminated from playoff contention, but their star guard remains one of the biggest reasons for optimism as the franchise builds toward its future.
