John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has rejected President Akufo-Addo’s suggestion for him to debate Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. Speaking at an event in Ningo Prampram, Mr. Mahama dismissed the idea, stating that engaging in a debate with Dr. Bawumia would elevate the Vice President’s position, something he believes is unnecessary.
President Akufo-Addo had earlier claimed that Mahama’s refusal to debate Bawumia stemmed from fear that his policies would be exposed as weak. In response, Mahama argued that the Vice President should instead debate the Ghanaian people and address the economic hardships the nation is currently facing.
Mahama specifically criticized Dr. Bawumia’s role as head of the Economic Management Team, holding him accountable for the country’s financial troubles. He further called on the Vice President to apologise to Ghanaians for what he termed the government’s mismanagement of the economy.
“I will not bring Bawumia to my level by debating him. He should go and debate the people of Ghana and apologise to them. I know my level,” Mahama firmly stated.
The remarks come as the political climate in Ghana intensifies ahead of the 2024 elections, with economic issues taking center stage in the national discourse.
