Ghana head coach Otto Addo has described the Black Stars’ 5–1 defeat to Austria as part of a broader learning curve as the team continues preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The loss, which came on Friday at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, is Ghana’s heaviest since the 5–0 defeat to Saudi Arabia in 2007.
Speaking to the media on Sunday ahead of Ghana’s next friendly against Germany, Addo admitted the team struggled from the start but emphasized that the experience would ultimately benefit the squad.
“As I said, we had a bad start. From Austria’s perspective, they got two gifts, and for us, it’s a learning process,” the 50-year-old said.
He added that the team must work on their response in challenging moments. “How do we deal with situations when we’re behind? We have to improve on that.”
The Black Stars will now shift their focus to their second international break friendly against Germany, scheduled for 18:45 GMT at the MHP Arena in Stuttgart, as they continue their preparations for the World Cup this summer.
