A circuit court at Nsuta in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region has granted bail in the sum of GHC30,000 to a 33-year-old teacher accused of assaulting a senior high school student during a disciplinary incident at a boarding house.

The accused, Charles Gyamfi, pleaded not guilty to the assault charge when he appeared before the court on Friday.

Presiding judge Simon Nketiah Gagah ordered that the accused provide two sureties, one of whom must be a government worker earning at least GHC3,000 monthly.

According to prosecutors, the complainant, Mustapha Asante, is the Senior House Master of Amaniampong Senior High School, while Gyamfi serves as House Master of Asenso House in the same school.

The prosecution, led by Detective Chief Inspector Peter Kantoreje, told the court that the incident occurred on 2 May at about 1:30 a.m. during routine dormitory supervision duties.

Investigators said the accused allegedly found Emmanuel Kwarteng, a Form Three student, using a mobile phone in the dormitory during late hours and attempted to confiscate the device.

The prosecution alleged that the student pushed the teacher to the floor and attempted to flee, prompting the accused to pursue him outside the dormitory.

The two reportedly wrestled to the ground before the accused allegedly assaulted the student.

The victim sustained injuries to his left eye and left knee and was rushed to Mampong Government Hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged the same day.

Medical findings later submitted to police indicated the student suffered bruises and contusions but no serious injuries. X-ray examinations conducted by UNILAB reportedly showed normal results.

Police said the accused later assisted investigators after being invited by the Regional Criminal Investigations Department following a complaint lodged by the student’s father.

The court directed the prosecution to file witness statements ahead of trial and adjourned the case to 22 May for further proceedings.
