Ghanaian rapper Edemsays his latest single Volta V is designed as more than music, describing it as a cultural statement centred on identity, heritage and self-worth.

Speaking on the Asaase Rush Hour on Tuesday (12 May), the chart-topping artist said the project reflects a long-standing commitment to promoting pride in one’s roots — particularly among young Africans navigating global cultural influences.

“Pride and identity is a form of self-love… for you to be an African and not feel mediocre to a Westerner, you must be proud of everything you are,” he said.

The song, which features singer Enam, has gained significant traction online, with the artist revealing it crossed 500,000 views on YouTube within 10 days of release.

Edem described Volta V as a “call to action” aimed at inspiring pride across Ghana’s diverse ethnic and regional identities.

He said the visual elements — including appearances in suits at national monuments such as the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Independence Square — were intentional, symbolising growth, heritage and freedom.

“If you know who you are and believe in who you are, you are truly free,” he said.

The rapper also addressed criticism over styling choices in the visualiser, arguing that modern expressions of identity do not diminish cultural authenticity.

The song has drawn strong emotional responses from listeners, including non-Ewe speakers, highlighting its cross-cultural appeal.

According to Edem, the goal was to create a piece that resonates beyond language barriers.

“I wanted something bigger than me… something that can linger for a very long time,” he said.

The artist is set to headline a live event dubbed “Edem Experience” on May 23 in Accra, where he will perform the song in an intimate setting for the first time.
