Ghana’s football authorities are refusing to set limits on the Black Stars’ World Cup ambitions, insisting the team should aim to go “as far as possible” while focusing on making the nation proud.

Neil Armstrong Mortagbe of the Ghana Football Association said expectations should not be capped at specific milestones such as the quarter-finals or semi-finals.

“Our target should be to make Ghana proud… wherever we get to, we should make Ghana proud,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (20 May).

While acknowledging the unpredictability of tournament football, Mortagbe said Ghana should approach the competition with belief and ambition.

“If we land in the final, hooray — why not? I believe in possibilities,” he said.

He pointed to historic underdog triumphs such as Greece national football team’s shock victory at Euro 2004 as evidence that unexpected success remains possible in international football.

“In football, sometimes it looks like providence is on your side… if you apply yourself and believe, you can surprise everybody,” he added.

Mortagbe said Ghana’s objective should be rooted in performance and national pride rather than fixed targets, stressing that strong displays on the pitch would ultimately define public perception of success.

The comments come as Ghana prepares for the upcoming World Cup, with expectations rising among fans following qualification.
