The People’s National Convention (PNC) has called for the immediate arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) national youth organiser Salam Mustapha over alleged threatening remarks, warning that such statements could endanger national security.

The party accused some political actors of making inciteful comments linked to possible retaliation in the event of arrests of party members.

Mustapha had cautioned that the party could take drastic steps that may destabilise governance if what he described as ongoing harassment and intimidation of its members is not halted.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday (19 May) during a courtesy visit by the NPP to the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps to express concerns about recent political developments, Mr. Mustapha said the party would not remain passive while its members are allegedly targeted.

PNC Chairman Samson Asaki Awingobit said the remarks should be taken seriously by security agencies.

“I want to call on the government, the national security coordinator the IGP and all the security capos that we want such a person to be immediately arrested and put before the law court,” he told reporters on Thursday (21 May).

Awingobit also referenced other alleged comments by a party communicator, saying they included threats against a political party headquarters.

“These are reckless statements… we at PNC think that these utterances need to be cracked down,” he added.
