Police have arrested a woman accused of issuing threats against President John Dramani Mahama in videos circulated on social media, authorities said on Thursday.
The suspect, identified by police as Mahama Aminat, also known as Akosua Serwaa Minat, was arrested on May 20 in Sekyere Zongo in the Ashanti Region following a joint operation by the Inspector-General of Police’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team and the National Operations Department’s Surveillance Unit.
Police said the suspect appeared in videos on TikTok making insulting remarks about the president and allegedly threatening his life, as well as inciting others to harm him and his wife.
The arrest followed the circulation of the videos on social media, according to police.
The suspect is in custody and is expected to be put before court, authorities said.
Police in Ghana have in recent years increased enforcement actions targeting online content deemed to contain threats, insults or incitement against public officials.
The case is under investigation.
