Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder James Milner has confirmed his retirement from professional football at the age of 40, ending a career that spanned more than two decades in English football.

Milner bows out as the Premier League’s record appearance holder, with 658 top-flight matches since making his debut for Leeds United in 2002 at the age of 16.

Across his career, he played for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton, earning a reputation for consistency, versatility, and professionalism.

In a statement, Milner said the decision came after 24 seasons in the Premier League.

He reflected on his journey from a teenage debutant to an established figure in English football, saying he could not have imagined the career he went on to have.

Milner also thanked all the clubs he represented, highlighting his spells at Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Brighton.

The former England international won several major honours during his career, including Premier League titles, domestic cups, and the UEFA Champions League.

He also earned 61 caps for England and featured at major international tournaments.

Milner said the relationships built during his career would remain among his most treasured memories, adding that football had given him more than he ever expected.
