No plans to sell $260M new headquarters – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) on Tuesday dismissed media reports suggesting it was considering the sale of its recently completed $260 million headquarters, describing the claims as “false and misleading”.

In a statement, the central bank rejected a report published by MyJoyOnline on June 1 that cited sources as saying the institution was considering disposing of the facility.

“The Bank of Ghana categorically states that this report is false and misleading,” the statement said.

The central bank stressed that it was “not considering, discussing, or planning” the sale of the headquarters, which it described as a critical asset supporting its operations and statutory responsibilities.

According to the Bank, the facility was commissioned to improve operational efficiency and strengthen its ability to discharge its mandate as Ghana’s central bank.

“The facility remains a critical asset of the Bank,” it said.

The Bank also warned that unverified reports about its operations could undermine public confidence in the country’s financial system and create unnecessary uncertainty in the market.

“We urge the public and the media to disregard this publication,” the statement added.

The issue of the Bank’s new headquarters has generated public debate in recent years due to the cost of the project, which was undertaken during a period of economic challenges and debt restructuring in Ghana.

The Bank said it remains committed to transparency and encouraged the media to seek clarification through its official communication channels before publishing reports concerning its operations.

It noted that official information from the institution is disseminated through its website, verified social media platforms, press releases issued by its Communications Department, and statements signed by the Secretary of the Bank.

The statement was issued by the Bank’s Communications Department on 2 June.
