President John Dramani Mahama began a state visit to Belarus on Friday aimed at strengthening diplomatic relations and expanding cooperation in agriculture, trade, education and technical development, the presidency said.

The four-day visit is being undertaken at the invitation of Aleksandr Lukashenko and is expected to culminate in the signing of at least four bilateral agreements between the two countries.

According to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mahama will hold bilateral talks with Lukashenko in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, before participating in an expanded meeting involving ministers and senior officials from both governments.

The discussions are expected to focus on strategic partnerships in agriculture, education, commerce and technical cooperation.

As part of the visit, Mahama will lay a wreath at the Victory Monument in honour of Soviet soldiers and Belarusian partisans who fought during World War II.

The Ghanaian leader is also scheduled to travel to Brest, where he will tour a major dairy processing facility as part of efforts to explore opportunities for collaboration in agro-processing and food production.

The visit aligns with the Ghanaian government’s agenda to strengthen food security, industrialisation and agricultural value addition.

While in Brest, Mahama will pay tribute at the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex, a site commemorating Soviet resistance during the 1941 Nazi invasion.

His itinerary also includes a visit to Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned as one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests.

The presidency said the visit reflects efforts by both countries to deepen cooperation and promote mutually beneficial partnerships across key sectors of their economies.

Mahama is expected to return to Ghana on 9 June.
