Midwives at the Mimima CHPS compound in the West Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region have appealed to the North East Regional Minister, through the Regional Health Directorate, for incentives to improve healthcare delivery in remote communities.

The midwives revealed that most of their colleagues are rejecting postings to those communities and prefer to stay in cities where living conditions are more favourable.

Senior and in-charge midwife at the Mimima CHPS, Benedicta Nindini Issah, made the appeal on behalf of her colleagues in CHPS facilities across the North East Region.

“Since our dear Honourable minister is around, we would also like to plead, especially those of us at CHPS level that if it is possible to collaborate with our regional health directorate so that some of the health workers at the CHPS, if there could be a form of motivation. And that could be a sponsorship to further our education and do specialised courses,” she appealed.

Benedicta emphasised that there is no motivation at the CHPS level, and that is why most of their colleagues are avoiding postings there as midwives.

“As a form of motivation, if that could be done, we would have really appreciated it because to be in the CHPS is not an easy task. So we are pleading if it could be possible for us to get that opportunity because some people do not want to go the CHPS because there is no motivation there,” Benedicta added.

She noted that she is currently the only midwife at the Mimima CHPS compound while her colleague has gone to further her education.

In the North East Region, nurses and midwives posted to the region prefer to work in Walewale and Nalerigu, the regional capital, than in other towns or villages because they are not given incentives.
