Australia and Germany have extended condolences to the Royal Family of Dagbon, the people of the kingdom and Ghanaians following the death of Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II, paying tribute to the late overlord’s role in restoring peace and unity to the traditional area.

In separate statements, the two countries expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and recognised the Ya-Na’s contribution to reconciliation and stability since his enskinment in 2019.

The Australian High Commission in Ghana extended its “deepest condolences” to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and all Ghanaians following the passing of the traditional ruler.

The mission did not elaborate further but joined the growing list of international and local institutions mourning the late Ya-Na.

The German Embassy in Accra described Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II as a leader who governed Dagbon with wisdom and grace.

The embassy said his greatest legacy was the unity and healing he brought to the kingdom following years of conflict.

“Since his enskinment in 2019, His Majesty led Dagbon with wisdom and grace, bringing lasting peace to the land,” the statement said.

“His greatest legacy remains the unity and healing he forged in Dagbon.”

The embassy said its thoughts and prayers were with the Royal Family and the people of Dagbon during the period of mourning.

The death of Ya-Na Mahama Abukari II has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political leaders, diplomatic missions, traditional authorities and organisations in Ghana and abroad, many describing his reign as one marked by reconciliation, stability and the restoration of peace in the Dagbon Kingdom.
