Glasgow 2026: Anita Afrifa injury blow hits Team Ghana’s relay hopes

Team Ghana’s chances of fielding its strongest women’s 4x100m relay quartet at the 2026 Commonwealth Games have suffered a major setback after sprinter Anita Afrifa sustained an injury during her opening race on Tuesday, casting doubt on her availability.

The 22-year-old sprint star was unable to complete Heat 4 of the women’s 200m after feeling a sharp pain in her right knee midway through the race.

Afrifa had been recovering from an injury sustained during Team Ghana’s pre-games training camp at the Derby Arena and was making her first appearance in Glasgow.

Her latest setback casts doubt over her availability for the women’s 4x100m relay, where she is expected to play a key role.

Team Ghana’s medical staff is monitoring her condition and will assess the injury before making a decision on her availability to compete in the event.

Afrifa’s injury is a blow to Ghana’s athletics team, which has enjoyed encouraging performances in their respective events and will be hoping she recovers in time for the relay.
