TheNational Film Authority (NFA) has set a medium-term target to increase Ghana’s film industry contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the current 0.2 percent to at least 1 percent.

Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Abla Dzifa Gomashie said the target forms part of efforts to transform the film industry into a stronger commercial and industrial sector capable of creating jobs, attracting investment and opening new economic opportunities for young people.

Speaking at the government’s Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, the minister said the government recognises the economic potential of Ghana’s film and creative industries and is working to strengthen their contribution to national development.

She said although the film industry’s direct contribution to GDP remained relatively small, its wider economic impact extended across several sectors.

“Although the film industry’s direct contribution to GDP is still evolving and emerging, its indirect economic impact is significant, spanning hospitality, broadcasting, advertising, events, logistics, digital platforms and tourism,” she said.

Ms Gomashie said the sector was also a significant employer of young people and could become an important driver of economic growth if properly developed.

She said the NFA’s medium-term target was to raise the sector’s GDP contribution to at least 1 percent from 0.2 percent.

“This ambition positions film as an industrial and commercial sector capable of driving jobs, attracting local and foreign investments and increasing Ghana’s presence in regional and global content markets,” she said.

The minister said efforts to achieve the target would form part of broader measures to strengthen Ghana’s creative economy and maximise the economic opportunities presented by the country’s film industry.
