OpenAI has introduced an Apple Messages plugin for ChatGPT that allows users to search conversations, analyse messages, draft replies and send texts through the Messages app.

The integration is available through ChatGPT Work and Codex on the macOS desktop app, giving users the option to work with iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations from within the AI platform.

Users can ask ChatGPT to find information in their message history, summarise conversations, suggest follow-up messages and prepare responses. The plugin can also send messages on a user’s behalf, while allowing users to review messages before they are sent.

The feature is designed to make it easier to manage conversations without manually searching through the Messages application. OpenAI has also demonstrated its use for suggesting follow-ups based on previous conversations.

However, the integration has raised questions about privacy and the extent of ChatGPT’s access to users’ messages.

OpenAI says the plugin operates locally on the user’s machine and does not create an index of all messages. The company has nevertheless advised users to maintain oversight of the AI when it is sending messages.

OpenAI specifically discourages users from enabling persistent approval for message sending because doing so removes the final opportunity to review a message before ChatGPT sends it.

The new integration forms part of OpenAI’s wider expansion of connected apps and AI-powered tools designed to perform tasks directly within users’ existing digital workflows.
