The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC)says it is not aware of any scheduled meeting with the Ministry of Transport over a proposed 30% increase in transport fares.

General Secretary of the council,Emmanuel Ohene Yeboah, said although discussions with stakeholders were necessary before any fare adjustment, he had not been informed about any meeting with the sector minister on Tuesday, July 28.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (28 July), Yeboah said there was still time for engagements before the end of the current fuel pricing window.

“I’m not aware of any meeting today,” he said.

“Today is the 28th. We have about two or three days to come in before the closing of this price window, so maybe before that we will meet. But meeting today, I’m not aware.”

His comments follow reports that transport operators were expected to meet the Transport Ministry to discuss calls for an upward adjustment in fares due to rising fuel prices and increasing operational costs.

Mr Yeboah said the GRTCC had not announced any new fares because fuel prices had been fluctuating, making it difficult to determine a stable adjustment.

“For some time, we haven’t come out with any new pricing because of the way our fuel prices have been. Fuel prices have been quite straight up and come down, so it makes the determination of a new fare a little more difficult,” he said.

He explained that the council’s priority was to ensure transport operators remain sustainable while preventing undue hardship for passengers.

Mr Yeboah said he would first consult with members before deciding whether broader engagements would be held with other transport unions over the proposed increase.
