Ghana and Gabon have moved to deepen economic and diplomatic cooperation with the signing of two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) following high-level bilateral talks between President John Dramani Mahama and Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema in Accra.

The agreements, signed at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, mark a renewed push by both countries to translate longstanding political relations into stronger economic partnerships.

The talks formed part of President Oligui Nguema’s three-day official visit to Ghana and were preceded by a private meeting between the two leaders.

President Mahama and President Oligui Nguema reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening Ghana-Gabon relations, with a focus on expanding trade, investment, and private sector collaboration.

The two leaders also pledged to leverage opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to increase intra-African trade and promote regional economic integration.

The discussions identified strategic areas for cooperation, including mining and mineral value addition, oil and gas, energy, agriculture, fisheries and aquaculture, forestry, climate action, maritime affairs, education, digital transformation, healthcare, tourism, and defence and security.

The two presidents directed relevant institutions in both countries to develop practical frameworks to advance cooperation in these sectors.

The bilateral engagement ended with the signing of two agreements: the Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between the governments of Ghana and Gabon and a second MoU on Cooperation in Diplomats’ Training between Ghana’s Foreign Service Institute and Gabon’s Institute of Diplomatic Studies.

The agreements are expected to strengthen institutional ties, improve diplomatic collaboration, and create new opportunities for partnership between the two countries.

As part of activities marking his visit, President Oligui Nguema planted a tree at the Jubilee House garden.
