Leading telecommunications operator MTN Ghana has announced plans to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040 as part of efforts to strengthen its climate action and sustainability agenda.
Net-zero emissions involve balancing the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere with an equivalent amount removed or offset, helping to reduce the impact of climate change.
To achieve this target, MTN Ghana says it will implement measures across its operations, including powering network infrastructure with cleaner energy sources, transitioning from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs), improving energy efficiency and enhancing electronic waste management.
“We remain committed to a more sustainable future with an ambition for net-zero by 2040,” Chief Enterprise Business Officer of MTN Ghana, Angela Mensah Poku, said during a media and stakeholder engagement in Kumasi.
The commitment is in line with global climate efforts under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming while improving energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact and building long-term business resilience.
As part of activities marking 30 years of operations in Ghana, MTN Ghana will in August 2026 launch its Sustainability Month, bringing together employees, suppliers, customers and communities to promote social and environmental responsibility.

“Sustainability is not just a standalone programme for us; it is embedded in how we operate and create value in society,” Angela Mensah Poku said.
Beyond its climate commitments, MTN Ghana says it is investing heavily in digital infrastructure to meet the country’s growing demand for reliable connectivity.
The company announced plans to invest $1.1 billion over the next three years, including $380 million in 2026 alone, to expand its network and strengthen the resilience of its systems.
“MTN Ghana is investing $1.1 billion over the next three years, and this includes $380 million this year alone, to expand our network and strengthen the resilience of the systems our customers rely on,” she said.
The telecommunications company is also using technology to improve access to healthcare, education and financial services while supporting a more digitally connected and inclusive economy.
MTN Ghana remains one of the country’s largest corporate taxpayers, contributing about six percent of Ghana’s total tax revenue, while continuing to invest in critical telecommunications infrastructure.
