Former Ghana striker Godwin Attram has welcomed the Ghana Football Association’s appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the Black Stars, describing it as a positive step that could reshape the national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The experienced Portuguese tactician was confirmed as Ghana’s new head coach following the dismissal of Otto Addo in March this year.

Addo parted ways with the national team after Ghana suffered successive defeats to Austria and Germany in international friendly matches as part of preparations for the upcoming World Cup.

Speaking to Graphic Sports, Attram expressed confidence in Queiroz’s ability to improve the team’s mentality and tactical organisation.

“The FA did well to appoint him, and we hope that whatever the country wants, he will deliver,” Attram said.

The former Black Stars forward also dismissed concerns over Ghana’s chances in what many consider a difficult World Cup group.

Asked whether Ghana could progress from the group stage, Attram remained optimistic.

“Why not?” he responded.

“At the end of the day, it’s just football, and if we prepare ourselves very well, in tune with whatever the players must do, I’m very sure we will qualify out of the group,” Attram added.

The Black Stars are set to intensify preparations for the Mundial with an international friendly against Wales on June 2 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Ghana will be making a fifth appearance at the World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The four-time African champions will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field before taking on England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium. Their final group-stage fixture will be against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Having endured group-stage exits at the 2014 and 2022 World Cups in Brazil and Qatar respectively, Ghana will be aiming for a return to the knockout stages for the first time in more than a decade.

Meanwhile, Queiroz has named a 28-man provisional squad, with the final team expected to be announced on June 1.
